Back on the ‘Maine’ stage: SFCC season premiere is visually sparse, emotionally intimate

Posted: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 5:32 pm

State Fair Community College started off last year’s theater schedule with “Honus and Me” in the Studio Theatre, but this year the troupe is back at the Stauffacher Theatre for the season premiere, which started its five-show run on Wednesday. That doesn’t mean “Almost, Maine” is necessarily a massive production, though.

With a bench in the middle of a faux-snow-covered stage, and images of the Big Dipper and the Northern Lights projected on a screen behind the actors, the primary set of “Almost, Maine” conveys a sense of wide-open space on a winter’s night. It’s an ambitious project for the actors, all of whom play at least three characters, but it’s also an intimate and minimalist show.
