Signs of the times: In Archie Scott Gobber’s Daum Museum exhibit, the medium is the message

Posted: Saturday, February 9, 2013 5:06 pm

The old excuse of “I don’t understand art” won’t fly with the Daum Museum’s current exhibit, a retrospective of Archie Scott Gobber’s signage-inspired art. The medium literally is the message, as Gobber’s art prominently features words. But that doesn’t mean the message is simple.

“Words give you a hook,” Daum Museum director Tom Piche said during Saturday’s opening reception for “Archie Scott Gobber Repeats Himself: A Survey of Works, 1990-2012.” “The artist has taken half the work out of it, because he’s named things for you and it’s a way to engage people in what you’re doing, and also to kind of trick people. It says something, and people think they know the meaning, but in Scott’s case, he always seems to be trying to subvert what the first meaning might be.
