Katy Depot exhibits explore the divided loyalties of Missouri and Sedalia in the Civil War

Posted: Saturday, December 22, 2012 6:05 pm | Updated: 9:59 am, Thu Jan 24, 2013.

Reading about the Civil War in history books, it’s tempting to just look at a map and see solid blue for the Union and solid red for the Confederacy. But the Civil War was not quite that simple, and no state illustrates that point better than Missouri, one of four states that allowed slavery but didn’t secede from the Union.

The Missouri Historical Society’s traveling exhibit, “The Civil War in Missouri,” will explore this border state’s role in the war from Wednesday through Feb. 17 at the Katy Depot. Also opening on Wednesday and continuing through all of 2013 is “Sedalia and the Civil War,” curated by Sedalia historian Becky Carr Imhauser.
