Intimate character study 'Proof' gives SFCC theater students a taste of film-style acting

The 2005 Gwyneth Paltrow movie “Proof” takes some serious liberties from the 2000 play by David Auburn. Yet the connection between studio-theater productions and movies, from the perspective of actors and directors, is undeniable.

“The movie is much different from the play, but the general idea is the same — the genius mathematical father and his daughter inheriting his genius,” said guest director Trevor Belt, a 2007 State Fair Community College graduate, before a rehearsal on Tuesday in SFCC’s Studio Theatre. “If you like the idea of the movie, you’ll like the play too, although it’s a different story.”
