38 Special feels young again on stage

Posted: Friday, August 10, 2012 7:03 pm | Updated: 9:51 am, Wed Aug 15, 2012.

38 Special plans to rock its audience into the night on Saturday at the Missouri State Fair. For more than three decades, the band has been true to its roots, playing Southern rock and roll.

Don Barnes, the co-founder of the band who plays the guitar and sings, remembers the good ol’ days in Jacksonville, Fla. He grew up in the same neighborhood as vocalist Donnie Van Zant, brother of Ronnie Van Zant, the late iconic singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They loved to get together and jam in the garage. Eventually, they had to look for new places to practice.
