Civil War songs to be featured at Arrow Rock lecture

The Friends of Arrow Rock’s 1st Saturday Lecture Series will continue with “Civil War Music from the Western Border” at 10 a.m. March 3 at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitor Center, presented by professional folk musicians Cathy Barton and Dave Para.

With fellow historian and songwriter Bob Dyer, Barton and Para have produced the only compilation of traditional and period music from the Civil War in the West. With banjo, guitar and hammered dulcimer, they will perform original music from the Civil War as well as songs inspired by the war during the one-hour program.

In recognition of the sesquicentennial observance of the Civil War, the 2012 1st Saturday Lecture Series has a Civil War theme. One more lecture in the series will be held at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site on April 7: “The Battle of Glasgow” by Jim Denny, Civil War historian and author of “The Civil War’s First Blood:  Missouri 1854-1861.”

The lectures are presented by the Friends of Arrow Rock and the Arrow Rock State Historic Site and are supported by an endowment funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and generous donors. They are free and open to the public.
