James Vaught’s Jan. 29 letter seems to hold the Sedalia City Council responsible for the decision made by Goody’s department store chain to close its stores. Vaught posits the premise that if councilmen hadn’t worked to see Goody’s locate a store here, the Sedalia Crossings shopping area would not have come into being, thereby forestalling the possibility of the store’s eventual closing. He also maintains that the new “throw-away buildings” in the shopping area could also have been avoided.
The Sedalia Crossings shopping area resulted in the creation of a valuable retail center in place of a previously flooded depression in the land that was of no use to anyone. A number of infrastructure improvements were realized as a result of the construction, as was the establishment of a number of new employment opportunities that didn’t exist before the area opened for business.
