Although hunting has never been on my list, some years back I was invited to join a pheasant hunting trip into Western Kansas. So, I borrowed an automatic shotgun, breeches and the mandatory hunting jacket. It didn’t take long to find out why breeches were needed as we fought through thickets, and if I never see another milo field, it will be too soon.
I was impressed that by law, the maximum load in my shotgun was three shells. And, according to my expert hunting friends, you could get a hefty fine if a game warden checked your weapon and found that your gun carried more than the three-shell limit. In contrast to what I am hearing today from gun nuts and/or the NRA, these hunters graciously accepted the three-shell limit. The reason? It was in the interest of preserving the wildlife — ducks, pheasants, whatever.
