IRS seeks taxpayers who didn't get their refunds
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Margaret Trost has a Stover mailing address, but lives in Gravois Mills. Each year, her husband, Oscar, prepares the couple’s income tax return, but this year Oscar went to a new tax agency to help with the preparations.
According to the Internal Revenue Service, the Trosts are one of the 1,357 taxpayers in Missouri who have not received their refund checks.
When told about her refund check, Trost said “we certainly did not,” know about it.
Trost said she does not remember receiving one for this year though.
“I’ll be anxious to make the phone call and see what it’s about,” Trost said.
In Pettis County, 11 regular refund checks worth $9,442, were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.
The average refund is $858. Trost is one of six residents in Morgan County who did not receive their refund checks.
Michael Devine, IRS media relations for Kansas and Missouri, said some of the most common reasons for people not receiving their checks are because of life changes such as marriage, divorce or students moving away for college and not remembering to change their addresses.
“You just forget that you didn’t get it,” Devine said.
The IRS is looking for more than 107,000 taxpayers nationwide to receive their part of the $123.5 million in refund checks.
“We want to make sure that these people can get their money,” Devine said.
He said one way to ensure that people receive their refund checks each year is by using direct deposit or by making sure their addresses are up-to-date with the U.S. Postal Service.
People who have refund checks available will receive their checks within four to six weeks after claiming them. Devine said if the check is not claimed this year, the money will be returned to the taxpayer after filing taxes next year.
“As soon as we get a new address, we will get you your money,” Devine said.
