The Sedalia-Pettis County United Way exceeded its 2008-2009 campaign goal by more than $11,000, organizers announced Friday.

Donors pledged $446,283, or 3 percent above the $435,000 goal.

This year’s theme, “Neighbor to Neighbor, The United Way,” encouraged people to help their neighbors by supporting 22 charitable agencies.

Elle Wasson, executive director of the Sedalia-Pettis County Way, said the donations were amazing.

“It’s been a huge statement about the generosity of our community,” Wasson said.

George Thomlinson, campaign chairman, said one reason for this year’s success has been companies adopting payroll deductions for employees.

“It’s the real key to our success,” Thomlinson said.

Since the campaign started in August, giving had exceeded expectations.

“The amazing thing this year is the fact that those who have given in the past tend to give more. The per capita giving has been higher that it usually was,” Thomlinson said.

Another key this year was many new companies and individuals donating — such as Starline Inc. and the Sedalia-Warsaw Board of Realtors.

In the industrial division, recent donors include: Tyson Foods, with $48,688 in corporate and employee donations; Pittsburgh Corning Corp., with $12,862 in corporate and employee donations; Fischer Concrete & Quarries, with $5,822 in pledges; West Central Concrete, with $1,352 in pledges; Starline Inc., with $1,000 and Sedalia Steel Supply, Inc., with $150.

In the business division, recent donors include: the Sedalia-Warsaw Board of Realtors, with a $500 donation; Coca-Cola Bottling Co., with $322 in employee pledges; Bichsel Jewelry, with $325; Sears Retail, with $200; Home Lumber, with $150; and Billie Barnes, REMAX Realty, with $100.

The professional division reached a total of $46,684 with donations of $100 from Dr. A. J. Campbell and Alan Wilson, CPA.

The education division reached a total of $21,192 with $7,136 in employee donations and pledges from State Fair Community College and $100 from Pettis County R-V for Jeans Day Donations.

The total from individual contributions by retired residents of Pettis County is $12,713.

The government and non-profit division reached a total of $28,128 with a $250 donation from State Fair Community Service Agency.
