Skyline Elementary special education teacher Kathryn Waters said she wasn’t expecting to be nominated as her school’s Outstanding Educator.

But Waters, who will retire at the end of this school year, was more than nominated. She was named Outstanding Educator for the Sedalia 200 School District at the meeting of the Sedalia Community Educators Association Tuesday at Smith-Cotton High School.

“It’s very much an honor, because this district is full of so many talented teachers,” Waters said.

The 30-year teaching veteran said she has a banner in her classroom proclaiming, “Hard work works” to encourage her students to work hard and be successful.

She said she believes every human being is of “infinite worth,” and that children deserved the best education possible to give them all the opportunities to succeed.

Besides being named the district’s Outstanding Educator, Waters was named along with eight other local teachers as an Outstanding Educator at her school.

Others named an Outstanding Educator of their schools were Robin Hargrave of Washington Elementary; Mindy Schnirch of Heber Hunt Elementary; Wynee Akers of Parkview Elementary; Sarah Tiehes of Sedalia Middle School; Pat McKinney of Parents as Teachers/Pettis County Early Childhood Cooperative, Kelly Pryde of Horace Mann Elementary; and Robin Blackburn of Smith-Cotton High School.

SCEA President Rose Crawford said it was difficult to choose a single person for District Outstanding Educator from such a deserving slate.

“All of these people are very, very strong representatives,” Crawford said.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the SCEA:

•Presented Parkview Elementary School with a trophy for winning last year’s SCEA Fitness Challenge.

•Introduced a proposed change in the group’s bylaws to split the secretary/treasurer position into two separate positions.

•Opened the floor for nomination of the association’s slate of 2008-2009 officers. No nominations were put forward at Tuesday’s meeting, but those interested have until March 1 to submit nominees in writing to SCEA Secretary-Treasurer Phyllis Domann at Sedalia Middle School.
