Thursday will mark both the finish and starting line for the Healthy Living Action Group’s Healthy U program as members from the 2012 class weigh in for the last time and the 2013 class is announced during “A Night of Inspiration.”

“I think it’s going to be an emotional night, but a fun one too,” said Sarah Nail, chairwoman of the Healthy Living Action Group and Community Outreach Coordinator for Bothwell Regional Health Center. “We wanted to do something special for the 2012 class, it’s been a big year for them, and also to inaugurate the 2013 class and kick off next year’s program with a bang.”

During the past 12 months, the 11 member 2012 class — Trish Ballance, Lisa Brock, Holly Brown, Kathy Burnett, Richard DeFord, Alicia Maggert, Letty Rodriguez, Bob Satnan, Amy Schneider, Robin Wollard and Redina Yantz — have lost a collective 470 pounds, an impressive number Nail said.

“I think between 11 people, a 470-pound weight loss is very achievable by most folks if they really make those nutrition and fitness changes,” she added. “During (A Night of Inspiration) they’ll weigh in for a last time and we’ll announce who had the highest percentage of weight loss and wins our big prize package.”

The winner will receive a one-year membership to Total Fitness Gym, a day at the spa package from Bodyworks Day Spa, a $250 gift certificate to Lockett’s Fig Leaf Boutique, a $100 gift card to Woods Supermarket, a 17-piece set of high quality cookware underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, a $20 gift certificate to Trendi Reflectionz, a $20 gift certificate to the Sedalia Area Farmers’ Market and a Specialized Expedition bike from Pro-Velo.

The winner of the Healthy U community contest, which started in August, will also be announced that night and will receive the same prize package, with the exception of the bicycle; instead they’ll receive two free bicycle rentals from Champion Cycles.

“The first part of the Night of Inspiration program will be acknowledging and honoring the 2012 class, recognizing each of them and discussing their successes and experiences in the Healthy U program,” Nail said. “Then we’ll announce the class of 2013, which will be a surprise.”

Nail said the Healthy Living Action Group interviewed 25 finalists wishing to be part of the 2013 class and, new this year, three 2012 Healthy U member sat in on the interviews. While they had no say in the final decision, Nail said having current class members there to ask questions and provide feedback was important.

“Their opinions really mattered to us,” she said. “They’re such great resources and really helped us focus in on who we thought would do well in the program. We were really looking for people who were going to be committed to making those lifestyle changes. It sounds a little selfish, but so often people put themselves behind their families or their career; we wanted people who really cared about making that change for themselves.”

The 2013 class will also be paired with the nutritional and fitness coaches during the event and will officially weigh in to start the process. Nail said there were a few minor tweaks made to the Healthy U program, based on feedback from the 2012 class and Health Living Action Group observations.

“One of the things we’re going to encourage this year is more communication between the fitness and nutritionists,” she said. “Some of that happened naturally this past year, but other times the coaches didn’t collaborate much at all; we want that to be a priority. We’ll also be setting up mentorships between the 2012 and 2013 classes.”

The biggest change, she said, will be to the community portion of the program.

“This year the community participants met monthly, which we didn’t feel was enough, so in 2013 they’ll meet weekly like the class of 2013 Healthy U members,” Nail said. “Weekly meetings definitely contributed to the successes of the 2012 class; you need that time for accountability and support and to remember that you’re all working toward the same goals.”

Nail said she was looking forward to Thursday, noting it’s been “quite a year” for the program.

“Aside from making that announcement of who will be in next year’s class, I’m really excited about honoring our 2012 class,” she said. “They’ve been so brave in sharing their stories and struggles with weight, not only with each other but with the community. They’ve done an amazing job over the last 12 months; I’m really proud of them.”
