The Sedalia City Council will review, but take no action on, a proposed smoking ban ordinance during its regular meeting on Monday.

After a debate between council members on whether to include all restaurants, bars and private clubs, council finally came to a tentative compromise during its last meeting. The new ordinance calls for a ban on smoking in all public places including bars, but it excludes private clubs, such as the Moose Lodge or American Legion, unless it’s hosting a public event.

The ordinance also allows smoking at businesses with a sole proprietor, within a “reasonable distance of 20 feet” outside entrances and buildings where smoking is prohibited, private residences and vehicles, hotel and motel rooms where smoking is allowed, private and semi-private rooms in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, retail tobacco stores and half of restaurant patios.

Council may decide to change the ordinance during the meeting and will likely vote to approve it at its next regular meeting, June 17.

During the meeting council will also:

• Review and approve a bid for smoke testing for city sewer lines to Yorktown, Va.-based Prism Contractors and Engineers; $103,935.

• Review and approve a bid for 40 2-yard Dumpsters and 10 4-yard Dumpsters from Kansas City-based American Equipment Company; $23,410.

• Review and approve a bid for the replacement of the Central Fire Station roof to Tipton-based G&R Construction. Numerous leaks were found in the roof after this winter’s snowfall and the cost is covered by insurance; $55,562.

• Review and approve an ordinance vacating an existing utility easement to Menard, Inc., at 4400 Wisconsin Ave.

• Approve records destruction in the Personnel and Municipal Court offices.

The Sedalia City Council pre-meeting will be at 6:15 p.m. in the mayor’s conference room, with the regular meeting immediately following at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Municipal Building, 200 S. Osage Ave. For more information call 827-3000.
