Pig dressing, livestock shows, tractor pulls and the annual parade will mark this year’s Smithton Fair, which begins today.

The three-day event begins with art, craft, and flower shows beginning at 9 a.m. today, though the real start to the fair will be the parade, which is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Organizers are hoping the return of popular past events will help draw crowds, according to Hope Leechi, a member of the fair committee.

“We are trying to do more for families and bring back events we haven’t had in a while,” Leechi said. “We just want everyone to come out and have a good, family-friendly time.”

Among those returning events is the Super Farmer Contest at 8 p.m. Saturday, which Leechi said is a chance for the county’s agriculture families to show off a range of skills from hay bale tossing to negotiating an obstacle course with a dozen eggs.

“That was a big draw for a lot of people in the past so we decided to bring it back,” Leechi said.

Following the parade, locals may see the crowning of the 2013-14 Miss Pettis County from among six contestants. The winner will go on to compete for statewide honors as the MIssouri State Fair Queen in August. That contest is set to begin at 7 p.m.

While fun and games are a big part of the fair, the county’s deep agricultural roots will also be on full display with 4-H and FFA livestock shows scheduled Friday and Saturday.

In addition, funds raised from today’s Auctioneer’s Bid Contest, slated for 8 p.m., will go toward scholarships for students pursuing ag-related degrees. Leechi said five students received $500 scholarships through the fund last year.

Admission is free to all events except for the Tractor Pull, set for 7 p.m. Saturday; admission for adults is $3 and $1 for children aged 6 to 12.
