The Sedalia City Council will hold a work session on Monday to discuss a possible smoking ban ordinance for the city.

Council held a similar session on April 29 and — after debating whether the ban should be across-the-board for all restaurants, bars, offices and private clubs or if certain areas should be excluded — decided to hold another session to continue discussions.

“During this session the mayor wanted to make sure council had time to discuss the issue more thoroughly among themselves,” said City Administrator Gary Edwards. “We’ll go through the proposed draft ordinance and then have time for council to walk through it, point by point if necessary, to see what they ultimately decide on.”

Edwards said there may be time for public comments at the end of the work session, though he did note that like last time, the mayor would ask that large groups or businesses elect a representative to speak for them.

“We also want to make sure there are comments that haven’t already been expressed during the earlier meeting,” he added.

Council will take no action today, though they may ask city staff to change the ordinance and bring it back to a future meeting.

Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the mayor’s conference room at the Municipal Building, 200 S. Osage Ave. For more information, call 827-3000.
