State changes WIC food list

Posted: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 12:00 am | Updated: 9:16 am, Wed Sep 5, 2012.

Participants in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program recently found out they would no longer be allowed to use WIC vouchers for name brands such as General Mills Cheerios, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Quaker Oats.

“Food costs have increased by 10 percent in Missouri in the last year, and program participation has increased by 4 percent in the last six months,” said Mary Lou Shane, WIC coordinator at the Pettis County Health Center. “One way the state is cutting costs is to take off some of the different brands and replace them with generic brands.”
