During a special awards ceremony Tuesday, Sedalia Police Department Officer Michael Elwood was named the SPD’s Officer of the Year, not that he had much time to celebrate.

“I have to work tonight so I don’t think I’ll be doing much celebrating — maybe on my day off,” Elwood said with a laugh.

Elwood has been with the SPD just two and a half years, but in that short time has shown tremendous leadership, said Chief John DeGonia.

“He leads the department in almost all our performance stats,” DeGonia said. “But more than that, he’s energetic, involved and always willing to do anything asked of him.”

Elwood said he first heard about the SPD from instructors at the police academy, who told him the department was “top notch.”

“It’s definitely true,” he said. “Sedalia has a great reputation both in our community and in the law enforcement community in general as a great place to work and I’ve found that is absolutely the case.”

During the awards presentation SPD Cmdr. David Woolery noted several of Elwood’s achievements in the past year, including seizing 1.75 pounds of marijuana and 60 grams of meth, both during traffic stops.

“My supervisor told me he was going to nominate me for Officer of the Year, but I honestly didn’t think I would get it,” Elwood said. “It’s really an honor.”
