County clerk holds successful voting machine test
Pettis County Clerk Nick La Strada conducted a successful voting machine test on Wednesday as preparations continue for the Nov. 6 general election.
La Strada was joined by Pettis County Collector Marsha Boeschen, a Republican, and Pettis County Democratic Central Committee Chairman Larry Yunt Wednesday morning for a test of the touchscreen and optical scan voting machines to be used in the election, now just 12 days away.
With the successful public test out of the way, La Strada will now turn his attention to standard pre-election training of the nearly 100 workers who will man county polling places on election day. Poll worker training will take place in four shifts, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m Friday.
“This is our fifth election this year,” La Strada said. “We have taken a lot of steps to update and streamline the process, and I think those will pay off on election day because this is going to be a big one.”
La Strada has estimated that voter turnout in the Nov. 6 election could go as high as 75 percent, an estimate buoyed by strong absentee voting. As of close of business on Wednesday, 989 voters have returned absentee ballots to the clerk’s office.
“It was a little bit slower today, but we have seen a lot of activity at the window, and we get between 20 and 25 requests for ballots to be mailed out every day,” La Strada said.
The last day to request a ballot by mail is Wednesday, and ballots must be returned to the clerk’s office by 7 p.m. on Election Day. La Strada will also open the clerk’s office on the second floor of the courthouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and Nov. 3.
“We just want to make sure everyone that wants to vote has an opportunity to,” La Strada said.
Complete sample ballots are available online through the county’s website at pettiscomo.com. La Strada has also launched Facebook and Twitter outreach efforts, with ballots also available through facebook.com/nicklastrada.
