Sedalia School District teachers got their first look at the new Smith-Cotton High School logo Friday during professional development meetings.

Until now, SCHS didn’t have an official logo; athletics teams and school groups used various tiger logos, which created a lack of consistency, said Wade Norton, SCHS principal.

“We needed to see unification and we didn’t have it,” he said. “Everything was different and there was no unity. To show our pride as a building, we needed our own logo.”

The new logo was created by SCHS art teacher Michael Shukers, with assistance from art teacher Josh Heimsoth. Shukers said he had been working on sketches of a new logo about five years ago and used those to help him in the process.

“I sat down and redesigned the logos several times until I got every part of it looking exactly the way I though it should look for a fierce Smith-Cotton tiger logo,” Shukers said.

The final product contains attributes from the University of Missouri-Columbia tiger logo and the bronze tiger statue in the high school, but with a modern twist, Shukers said.

It is a three-part logo that can be taken apart and used in different forms for items such as T-shirts, letterhead and athletic uniforms. Shukers said he felt the ribbons gave the logo a traditional feel, while the interlocked “SC” made it specific to Smith-Cotton.

“My personal nickname for it is the Smith-Cotton fierce tiger logo. I think it embodies the soul of the Sedalia educational system,” Shukers said. “It’s completely original and all ours. It sets us apart from the rest.”

The logo will begin to be incorporated this year, starting with the official district T-shirts and will eventually be used on letterhead and athletic team T-shirts and uniforms. Norton said the district is trying to get a few tiger logos in the gym and throughout the building so people can begin to recognize the new logo.
