Oncologist talks about high-tech radiation
The latest advances in cancer treatment were on the table for discussion Thursday night at Bothwell Regional Medical Center’s quarterly lecture series “The doctor is in.”
Dr. William Decker, the medical director for radiation oncology, led the discussion on intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a type of radiation treatment for cancer patients, with about 25 people.
“People are interested in hearing about cancer. There’s a lot of hype about cancer,” Decker said. “They hear the C-word and think that their lives are over, when really we actually do better treating cancer than we do other diseases.”
The talk focused on when IMRT is appropriate; whether Medicare covers IMRT and individual cancer cases from the audience.
