A Lincoln police officer was injured Tuesday after jumping into the back of a patrol truck while in pursuit of a suspect in Benton County, authorities said.

Officer Nicole Hedrick, 26, was taken to Bothwell Regional Health Center after the incident, which happened at 23310 Steffens Lane shortly before 5 p.m., according to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

“What happened was the pursuit left the roadway, and she was in a patrol vehicle, and decided to get in the bed of a pickup truck,” because the car could not make it over ditches and through the wooded area, said Benton County Sheriff Rick Fajen.

“It threw her around and broke her wrist,” he said. Hedrick was later treated and released from Bothwell.

The Highway Patrol reports indicate the truck struck several trees while in pursuit of another vehicle. Fajen said the officers were chasing Larry Steffens, 62, of Cole Camp, who Fajen said was wanted on a felony failure to pay child support warrant.

Steffens was arrested and remained in Benton County Jail on Wednesday in lieu of $2,500 bond on the charge, a jail spokesman said. Other charges against Steffens are pending, Fajen said.
