Beginning knitter Leslie Barnes sat in the Swine Pavilion with her red yarn and her needles.

The 17-year-old traveled from rural Yellville, Ark., to the Missouri State Fairgrounds with one goal: to improve her knitting.

Ive been crocheting for 10 years, but Im going to learn how to to knit, she said.

Barnes planned to take classes this weekend at the annual Heart of America Fiber Festival at the fairgrounds, which is sponsored by the Missouri Natural Colored Wool Growers Association.

Fiber was available on the hoof, as a sweater, or any point in between at the festival Friday. The animals that produce the fiber, roving, yarn and finished products were just a few of the wares on offer.
