Beginning next week, Sedalia residents will start seeing a survey in their water bills asking them to rate city government services.

City Administrator Gary Edwards said the survey will be used to gauge public opinion on services and individual departments.

“It’s really meant to give us a baseline of the overall impression of the services we provide,” he said. “We’ll be able to get people’s general impressions of the city and what kind of job we’re doing. That will allow us to really look at each individual department, how we’re doing and what we need to fix.”

Unlike surveys sent out last year that dealt with the city’s appearance, Edwards said this survey will not lead to the creation of a committee to tackle the results or look at changes that need to be made.

“That was a completely different set of circumstances,” he said. “This will be used more internally to establish if we have problems to fix and, more than that, if we need to allocate resources to do so. And those resources aren’t necessarily monetary-related, they may be looking at staff levels or how we conduct things internally.”

Questions will differ for each department and Edwards noted citizens will not be required to answer questions about some internal departments, such as Finance and IT.

“As far as I know, there hasn’t been a survey like this sent out before,” he said. “I’m sure in the past some form of a questionnaire about city government was likely given out, but I don’t think there has been anything this comprehensive.

“We’re hoping for a high return rate, generally with surveys anywhere from 7 (percent) or 8 percent to 25 percent is considered good, and with the Clean Sedalia surveys we saw just over 10 percent returns. I would encourage everyone to fill it out and really let us know how we can best serve this community.”

The survey will also be available online at the city’s website,
