Sedalia Public Library employees will start moving approximately two-thirds of the library’s collection to the old McLaughlin Bros. Furniture Store on South Ohio Avenue later this week.
During its regular meeting Monday, Library Board members got an update on the moving plans and voted to approve a lease agreement with State Fair Community College, which owns the building.
“The one-year lease is for $1, because of legal reasons, but State Fair is being very generous offering us this space,” said Library Director Pam Hunter. “We’ll pay for the utilities but they’ll cover the building if things need to be fixed.”
SFCC approved the donation while the 111-year-old library building undergoes major construction on its west wing and front section. Hunter said library employees have spent the past week packing the collection and cleaning the McLaughlin building.
“We’ve also added the new building to our insurance policy so everything will be covered,” she said. “And Jackson Moving and Storage has donated manpower and two trucks to help move everything there and back to the library when it’s finished, too.”
The library collection will be moved Wednesday and Thursday though Hunter did not yet know when the new building would be open for patrons.
