Hundreds of children will return to school this fall with plenty of pencils, paper, rulers, crayons and backpacks, thanks to the efforts of the Missouri Valley Community Action Agency and the army of other agencies that made contributions to the program.

An annual three-hour Back to School Fair Tuesday at the Liberty Park Convention Hall drew a crowd of parents escorting youngsters. The line of families snaked from the front door of the Convention Hall around the walls of the room, where tables had been set up.

At each table, members of organizations ranging from the Boys and Girls Club and the Family Dental Service to the Salvation Army distributed school materials and other trinkets, such drinking cups or water bottles to parents and children.

Among the items the Salvation Army handed out to youngsters was a $25 gift certificate for school clothing from their stores. The Boonslick Library had stacks of bookmarks to remind students that reading is cool. Children and Community Teaming Up for Success, or CACTUS, had neatly placed stacks of book bags on its table for the children.
