JEFFERSON CITY — The Democrat took home nine awards, including three first-place honors, in the Associated Press Managing Editors 2010 Newswriting Contest, as announced Wednesday in Jefferson City.

The Democrat competed in Division 3 against other Missouri newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 to 20,000.

Photographer Sydney Brink tallied two first-place honors, in feature photography for “Showgoats” and in spot news photography for “Fire damages apartment.”

Sports writer Seth Stringer won first place in spot sports reporting for “Maiden voyage,” about a Pilot Grove boys basketball postseason game.

Brink also won second place in sports photography for “Picking up pace,” and copy editor John Hansen took second in headline writing for “Good things come to O’s who wait,” about the Concordia baseball team’s state championship.

Former Democrat photographer Hal Smith won a pair of third-place awards — in sports photography for “Title within reach” and in feature photography for “Red, white and ka-boom,” a shot of the Fourth of July fireworks at the state fairgrounds.

Editor Bob Satnan won third place in headline writing for “Squash honored; prize is a big bag of zucchini,” and reporter Tonya Fennell won third place in feature writing for “A mother grieves: ‘I said everything I wanted to say to her,’ ” about 2-year-old Mckenzie Brownlee losing her battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

The judge of Brink’s “Showgoats” wrote: “A clear winner. We burst out laughing simultaneously and immediately upon seeing the photo. A real good county fair catch.” On “Fire damages apartment,” the judge wrote “A very emotional moment, sharp and right on time.”

The judge of Stringer’s “Maiden voyage” wrote: “Easily the best of the bunch. A nice game story. Gave us a good look without too much play-by-play.”
