Starting this week and running through Sept. 28, Sedalia residents may donate money at local Staples stores with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting students involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri.

Matt LaCasse, a spokesmen for the Club, said the Staples for Students supply drive has become something the Club and its members have come to depend on each year.

“We get quite a bit donated each year from Staples,” he said. “We usually end up with quite a large box full of school and office supplies, from notepads and paper to pens and markers. Anything you might need in a classroom or office.”

The Club then gives supplies directly to members so they can use them in school as well as during Club time. LaCasse said the donations help to lessen the burden for families and teachers so children are supplied.

“The donations are something people don’t give much thought to, but it really helps our organization and our members,” he said.

The Boys & Girls Club of West Central Missouri serves children ages of 5 to 18 and has a summer program that includes members from grades kindergarten to 12.

“Our programming focuses around three pillars: academic success, character leadership and healthy lifestyles,” LaCasse said. “In each program, each kid gets at least 60 minutes of homework help and staff sit with them to work with them as long as they’re at the Club. Part of our programming includes what it means to be a man in today’s society focusing on honesty and trustworthiness. We’re really aiming to create well-rounded citizens for West Central Missouri.”

School supply donations will come in handy during homework time, LaCasse added.

“The way our Club benefits the most is from the donation of office and school supplies;a sometimes we do get a check but usually not much,” LaCasse said. “This is a great help for us.”

Staples kick-started the campaign by donating $125,000 worth of school supplies to the program this year. Since 2008, the campaign has raised nearly $3 million for hundreds of thousands of students in need throughout the country.

Staples is located at 3601 W. Broadway Blvd. For more information about Staples for Students, go to staples.com.
