Missouri primary bill lost in special session

Posted: Friday, September 30, 2011 12:00 am | Updated: 11:26 am, Wed Sep 5, 2012.

The Missouri Republican Party voted Thursday evening in favor of a plan that would see self-identified Republicans choosing their preferred presidential nominee through a caucus system, rather than the scheduled Feb. 7 primary election.

Lost among the wrangling over tax credit reform and economic development issues in a contentious special session of the Missouri General Assembly was a bill intended to move the state’s presidential preference primary from February to March. National Democratic and Republican party leaders issued rules meant to preserve the “first contest” status of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada that threatened states who scheduled primary contests before March 6 with losing half their delegates to national conventions.
