Satnan: Hey kids! What’s for Thanksgiving dinner?

7 months 12 days 14 hours ago |3 Views | | | Email | Print

Ask my family and they will tell you: I am a proponent of the “one-dish meal,” concoctions that incorporate meat, vegetables and sometimes rice or pasta into an “everything in one bite” medley.

I think I got it from Grandma Satnan, who would serve something she called “goulash” that was a mixture of ground beef and peas in a sweetened tomato puree sauce served over mashed potatoes. When I was a kid, I couldn’t get enough of it.

But Willow Franklin has taken the “one-dish meal” to new heights.

Each year, Smithton Elementary School teacher Glenita Montgomery’s kindergartners provide their take on how to prepare the Thanksgiving meal. Willow took a pass on the traditional turkey and stuffing, and instead offered up a melange of spaghetti, meatballs, ham, marshmallows and sausage. What, no veggies?

Kashaun Raggs has a different strategy — bypass the meal and go straight to dessert. Her recipe’s directions are simple: Just go get a cake. That’s what I call efficient.

We hope the students’ recipes bring a smile or two, and that this Thanksgiving provides opportunities to share time with friends and family and to reflect on all our blessings.
