The Pettis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a pair of suspicious deaths after two bodies were discovered in the remains of a Monday morning house fire in west-central Pettis County.
Pettis County Sheriff Kevin Bond told the Democrat on Monday night that the bodies were transported to Columbia, with autopsies to be performed today.
“At this point, we are conducting a criminal investigation,” Bond said.
Bond added he expects to call in the Rural Major Case Squad once autopsy results have been returned.
According to a press release from Bond, Green Ridge Fire Department was called to a house fire on Morton Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Green Ridge and LaMonte Fire Department crews fought the blaze until around 1 p.m.
Pettis County deputies and the Missouri State Fire Marshal were requested to respond to the scene when firefighters discovered a body inside the residence.
Upon further investigation, authorities located a second body in the home, the release said.
The Pettis County Coroner’s Office transported the remains late Monday afternoon to Columbia for autopsies on scheduled today to positively identify the remains and determine the cause of death.
