Center for Human Services calling all scrapbookers for 15th annual fundraising event
Scrapbookers looking for a social setting to share their work may register now for the annual Center for Human Services’ “Spring Into Scrapbooking.”
The annual fundraiser, now in its 15th year, has proven a valuable event, according to Susan Mergen, the event organizer and the center’s development director.
“It started when I started scrapbooking myself 15 years ago,” Mergen said Monday. “It started as a hobby of my own and then we made a fundraiser out of it. I had a friend, Nancy Dove, who had just started a home business selling supplies and it just took off from there.”
Although other organizations have followed suit over the years, using the pastime to raise money, Mergen said it remains popular.
“You have to get creative with your fundraisers, but this one has remained popular,” Mergen said.
About 800 people have participated over the years, with the event drawing between 40 and 90 people each year.
“This is open to everyone, from beginners to veterans. If they are just getting started (Dove) will help get them started and the veterans can buy a lot of supplies that day,” Mergen said. “We even have some of our adult clients to do it. It is great to have them interact with community members in a setting like this.”
Proceeds from the event go to support the center’s wide range of services.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 23, at the Ewing Vocational Center, 1500 Ewing Drive.
Registration is $20 per person and includes lunch and snacks. Mergen said people should bring their own supplies, plus family photos and other keepsakes, though Dove and other vendors will be on hand with additional items for sale.
“We go for 10 hours and this is an ideal space. We have big workshop tables set up and there is plenty room for everyone to spread out and work,” Mergen said. “This is a good chance for the ladies to get together and share ideas and show each other their scrapbooks, and the money goes to the center.”
