An engineer who has three school-aged children is the most recent candidate to file for election to the Sedalia 200 Board of Education.

Michael Stees, 46, of Sedalia, filed his candidacy Tuesday, bringing the number of candidates to four.

Incumbents Scott Gardner and Ken Coffelt will seek to retain their seats in the April 8 election. Sedalia resident and former school board candidate Ken Perry has also filed.

Incumbent Jim Waldo hasn’t said whether he will run again.Stees, who moved to Sedalia in 1994 from Elkhart, Ind., works as a safety and environmental engineer at Waterloo Industries.

He said he had been “approached several times in the last several years about running. ... With my safety and environmental background, I feel it’s a good asset to the school board. ... I’ve got a science background, and right now, the science facilities are a little bit behind the time,” Stees said.

He and his wife, Lisa, have three children, ages 15, 13 and 10, who attend the high school, middle school and Skyline Elementary School.

He said he has no complaints about the district’s operation.

“I don’t know if there are any issues I am concerned about,” Stees said. “The new high school is a plus for the community, for the students and businesses. I think the school board is doing a great job and want to help them continue.”

Stees cited “getting the new school up and going” as a major challenge facing board members.

He said he would like to see the school district work with the city government to come up with a civic center and indoor pool that both could use.

“And I know they are wanting to improve on the tornado and storm shelters, and get a community and civic center,” Stees said. “I think those can all tie together to benefit community as well as the schools. ... Right now, the pool has size issues for the way they have the races set up. There are tight quarters.”

Stees also said he would to see sporting venues that are “scattered across town” consolidated into one location.

Tuesday is the deadline to file for school board election.
