Disability awareness event at SFCC

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

State Fair Community College will promote “Disabilities as Diversity” with activities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Wednesday in the Parkhurst Student Commons.

The public can try out disabilities at seven simulation booths to gain better insight into the challenges of living with a disability.

Simulations will include: Lip Reading for the Novice, Instant Dyslexia, Do You Have a License to Drive that Wheelchair? M&M Pick Up, Let's Play in the Sand, No-Looking Hand Wash, and Do You Know It All? Test Your Knowledge.

The event is sponsored by the SFCC access office, the Special Population Advisory Committee and an SFCC student focus group.

In fall 2007, the office served 186 students with disabilities. Spring students have disabilities including attention deficit disorder, chronic illness, learning disabilities, psychological needs, deafness or hearing impairments, blindness, mobility impaired, autistic, and orthopedically impaired.

For more information, call Shanda Watson or Rhonda Faris, at (660) 530-5832, ext. 7253 or 7489.
