Ballots set for upcoming elections

The Sedalia Democrat

The ballots were set in the races for several state and county positions as the filing period for the Aug. 5 primaries closed Tuesday.

Some candidates, including additions to the county public administrator’s and the 118th District state House of Representatives seats, waited until the last moment to file.

Besides the public administrator’s spot, seats up for election this year will be the eastern and western County Commission seats, sheriff, assessor, treasurer, coroner, surveyor and party central committee positions.

Also up for election are the U.S. House of Representatives seats — including Pettis County’s 4th District seat — both the 116th and 118th District state representative slots and several statewide offices.

The county assessor, treasurer, coroner and surveyor races were uncontested, as was the state’s 116th District representative seat.

Incumbent County Assessor Dean Dohrman, a Republican, faces no opposition. Neither do Democratic Treasurer Jane Kelley, Republican Coroner Robert “Skip” Smith and Democratic Surveyor Kerry Turpin. State Rep. Tom Self, R-Cole Camp, is also unopposed in his re-election.

Republican incumbent Eastern Commissioner Rod Lindemann will face GOP challenger Gary Williams for his party’s nomination on Aug. 5. The winner of that primary will face Democratic candidate Bill Noland on Nov. 4.

Western Commission seat Democratic candidates Phyllis Domann and Randy Dillon will be on the ballot Aug. 5 to decide who will challenge Republican incumbent Larry Wilson on Nov. 4. Wilson is unopposed for his party’s nomination.

With neither facing a party challenge, incumbent Sheriff Kevin Bond, a Republican, will face Democrat Brad Anders on Nov. 4.

Last-minute filer Vincent Phang, a Republican, will challenge Democratic incumbent candidate Charli Ackerman for the county’s public administrator position.

Incumbent state Rep. Stanley Cox, R-Sedalia, will run against Philip J. Sherman for the seat’s Republican nomination. Jerry Beck, Kevin Walker and Stan Bowlin have filed as Democratic candidates for the position.

U.S. Rep Ike Skelton, a Democrat, is unopposed for his party’s nomination, but three Republican contestants are vying to challenge him for the District 4 seat. Clinton resident Stanley Plough Jr., Sedalian Joseph Terrazas and Jeff Parnell of Rogersville are on the Aug. 5 ballot for the GOP nomination.

Absentee voting for the August primary will begin June 24, while the last day to register to vote in those primaries will be July 9. The registration deadline for the general election is Oct. 8.

Pettis County voters may register to vote at the county clerk’s office on the second floor of the Pettis County Courthouse, 415 S. Ohio Ave. To register, residents should bring a form of identification with a current address on it.

Absentee voting for the upcoming April 8 municipal elections is under way through 5 p.m. April 7. The county clerk’s office will be open Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate absentee voters who cannot come during the week, and teams will be active Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4, for absentee voters who cannot come to the courthouse.
