ALTON — A man who allegedly damaged, then stole copper pipes when he was on the roof of a grocery store Feb. 21, is facing two felony charges.

Suspect William I. Butler, 46, who 3rd Circuit Court records say lives in the 2200 block of Gillis Street in Alton, still was in police custody Monday.

Also Monday, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Butler with criminal damage to property over $300 and theft under $500, second subsequent charge.

The warrant says Butler damaged copper pipes and the roof at Shop ‘n Save, 1721 Homer Adams Parkway, causing more than $300 in damage. It also says Butler has a Sept. 9, 2011 retail theft conviction in Madison County.

Pfc. Emily Hejna, public information officer at the Alton Police Department, said someone called police to report a “suspicious person on the roof of the store,” with officers then coming to the location and arresting Butler.

ALTON — A man who allegedly stole bars of soap from a drug store is in jail after being charged with retail theft under $300, his second subsequent offense.

The man, Ernest B. Smith, 48, allegedly took the soap Feb. 18 from the Upper Alton Walgreen Drug Store, 1650 Washington Ave., without paying for the items.

His address was not immediately available; the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed the charge on Monday.

The warrant says Smith was convicted of robbery on Dec. 14, 2010 in Madison County, prompting the felony level of the theft charge.
