July 4 celebration promises to be bigger, better
Comments 0 | Recommend 0For the second year, Sedalia residents will be offered an old-fashioned July 4 celebration to mark our nation’s independence.
Events are scheduled to include a parade, concert, car show, games and contests — all for free.
Terry Cockrell, grand marshal of the events, said last year he only had 30 days to prepare the events.
“Last year was a scramble,” Cockrell said.
This year, with the help of former City Council candidate Joe Zaremba, who will serve as assistant grand marshal, as well as community members and businesses, more events will be taking place.
Zaremba said he and Cockrell are just trying to revive an event that took place in Sedalia many years ago.
“Our end goal is to have a lot of fun and as much free food as possible,” Zaremba said.
The organizers are relying on donations and volunteers to help make the event a success. Zaremba said they need between 30 and 40 volunteers to help with the parade, games and to serve food.
Cockrell also is looking for area churches to help coordinate games for children to play at Liberty Park and in downtown Sedalia.
“We would like to have more community members help out to make this year a little bit more special,” Cockrell said.
Events are set to begin at 10 a.m. July 4 at Liberty Park with a youth fishing contest for children ages 5 to 12. Zaremba said plans are to serve hamburgers and hot dogs at a free barbecue.
“There’s a lot of activities for young children, but there will be things for all ages,” Zaremba said.
Some of the adult and children’s games expected include tug of war, volleyball and races.
“We will be giving away a lot of prizes,” Zaremba said. Prizes include pool passes and T-shirts.
Cockrell said last year about 1,200 people attended the events.
A parade will begin at 11 a.m. downtown and feature more than 20 entries. Anyone interested in being in the parade can participate for free.
Following the parade, the Gospel Expressions music group will put on a two-hour show at the west porch of the courthouse.
“This is one day to set the problems aside and show support in your community, in your state and in your country,” Cockrell said.
A car show will also be held downtown along with free food, drinks and activities until 3 p.m.
“If you wanted to be a part of it last year, this is your chance to be a part of it this year,” Cockrell said.
Anyone interested in volunteering or donating items can contact Cockrell at 660-829-0784 or Zaremba at 660-473-0500.
“It’s an event for everybody to come to,” Zaremba said.
Other July 4 events include a concert by Sidewinder at the Pepsi Grandstand on the Missouri State Fairgrounds and a fireworks display provided by The Blue Ribbon Steering Committee.
