For anyone who has attended the Taste of Cole Camp in past years, event chairwoman Judi Kerber has a message for you: “Every year is different.”

The annual fundraiser for the Cole Camp Chamber of Commerce begins at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the American Legion Building in downtown Cole Camp. The participating vendors include Charley’s Buffet, Maple Street Café & Bakery, 4K Cheese & Meats, Handel Haus Tea Room, Classic Steakburgers, Red Baron, Cash’s Deli, Calgaro’s Pizza, Rick’s Lincoln Inn, Dairy Bar, Cano’s Country Store and The German Table.

When asked what will be on the menu, Kerber said to expect “soups, fish, chili, brisket, pizza and authentic German food, that’s for sure.” But she knows there will be plenty more.
“They always surprise me, I never know what’s coming in,” she said.

Kerber has served as chairwoman of the event for four years, but it’s far from a one-woman show.

“We have so many people work on this, it is not even funny,” she said. “We are so blessed with all of the merchants who come.”

One of those merchants is Maple Street Café & Bakery, which is returning to Taste of Cole Camp after missing last year’s event. Maple Street’s Julie Mazelin said they will serve meat kolaches — filled bread pastries — along with a couple of the café’s take-and-bake casseroles and some of their cookies.

“We enjoy serving the community,” Mazelin said, adding that participating in Taste of Cole Camp “is a good way to get our product out so people can taste it and know what we do here — and we enjoy doing it.”

Kerber said Charley’s Buffet will be back again providing an incredible array of desserts. Last year the sweet treats covered two long tables, “and they filled it several times — they are so good,” she said.

In past years, the weather has been less than ideal for the event but attendance still was solid. The forecast this year is for better conditions, so Kerber remains hopeful that people from around the area will drop in for dinner.

“We have been so lucky, we have people coming from Warsaw, Sedalia, Lincoln ... Hickory County,” she said. “This is very special, and we look forward to it every year.”
