Sedalia Democrat

These cases were heard by Judge Robert L. Koffman on Monday, according to Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Mittelhauser:

•Jamie Barnett, 35, of Sedalia, was placed on probation for five years for criminal nonsupport of a minor child. He pleaded guilty February, and he received probation because he paid his current child support, plus some toward the arrearage. A condition of his probation is that he continue to make the payments.

•Alan Cantrell, 20, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by Sedalia Police Officer Andrew Silvey April 3. The officer found a little more than 40 grams (less than two ounces) of marijuana that Cantrell admitted was his. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail.

•Lawrence Christopher Carter, 37, of Kansas City, was placed on probation for five years for criminal non-support of a minor child. He pleaded guilty in January and received probation because he paid his current child support plus part of the arrearage. A condition of his probation is that he continue paying child support.

•Robert Caviness, 47, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license, both of which were felonies because of prior convictions. He was arrested by Sedalia Police Sgt. Ron Miller April 27 after a single vehicle accident at 24th Street and New York Avenue. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

•Dominic Claxton, 26, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation controlled substance with intent to deliver, admitting that on Dec, 4 he possessed an off-white chunky powder that he represented to be crack cocaine. Sedalia Police detectives were conducting an investigation on that date using a confidential informant who attempted to buy cocaine from Claxton. After initially agreeing to sell the substance, Claxton took the money from the informant and then fled on foot after seeing officers parked nearby.  He was sentenced to two years in prison.

•Timothy Davis, 31, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to property damage in the first degree and tampering in connection with a theft from a motor vehicle on Feb. 6, 2006. Karen Vollmer’s 1999 Chevy Prism was broken into while it was parked in a  lot on West Broadway Boulevard. Sedalia Police Detective Jill Green found and collected a small amount of blood in the vehicle. After Davis was sent to prison last year, a positive “hit” on the Missouri Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) confirmed that the blood in the vehicle came from him. He was sentenced to two years in prison.

•Shannon Demshick, 37, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and unlawful transactions with a child. Members of the Sedalia Police Department's Drug Enforcement Unit served a search warrant at her home at 1108 S. Osage Ave. Sept. 20 and found methamphetamine residue and a small amount of marijuana.  Demishick’s children lived in the home, leading to the unlawful transactions charge. The judge ordered a sentencing assessment report and scheduled sentencing for Aug. 1.

•Michael George, 24, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to stealing and resisting arrest in connection with a Feb. 27 incident during which he struck a juvenile and then stole his ball cap. On March 13, when Sedalia Police Detective Martin Holdeman attempted to arrest George for the offense, he fled from officers. George was sentenced to four years in prison.

•Marco Gomez,  30, of Mora, pleaded guilty to driving with a revoked license.  He was arrested by Missouri State Highway Patrolman Mark DeGraffenreid Sept. 15 after an accident on 32nd Street. The offense was a felony because of Gomez’s convictions for DWI. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail.

•Thomas Iliff, 56, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to assault in the third degree, admitting he recklessly injured a family member Feb. 25 when he threw a brick through a window at his home during an argument. A 90-day sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on probation for two years.

•James V. Ingram, 27, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to assault of a law enforcement officer in the second degree and domestic assault in the second degree. The first offense occurred Feb. 3 when the defendant attempted to injure Sedalia Police Officer Travis Lorenz by biting him as officers were arresting Ingram for trespassing. The second offense arose from a May 8 incident during which he struck a family member while arguing with her. He was sentenced to two consecutive 45-day county jail sentences.

•Timothy Klein, 48, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance.  Pettis County Sheriff's Detective Mark Morgan stopped Klein for a traffic violation Dec. 19 after he saw the defendant leave a house suspected of drug activity. After Klein threw a small object out the window, Morgan found a baggie with a half gram of methamphetamine on the ground near the vehicle and a syringe with a small amount of the drug in the vehicle. The prosecuting attorney recommended a four-year sentence. Sentencing was set for June. 25.

•Shauna Knoeferl, 24, of Windsor, pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree.  The charges arose from a Nov. 19 single-vehicle accident at the South Flat Creek bridge on state Route 52. An investigation by Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ahern revealed that Knoeferl was intoxicated at the time of the accident.  Her two children were passengers and suffered minor injuries. A five-year sentence was suspended, and she was placed on probation for five years with a requirement that she serve 60 days in jail as shock detention.

•Christopher Pugh, 22, of Jefferson City, pleaded guilty to stealing at Wal-Mart Jan. 13. Store employees attempted to stop the defendant as he left the store without paying for a television. When arrested later in the day by Sedalia Police Officer Matt Sprinkles, Pugh admitted that he tried to steal the TV after Richard Hollandsworth, who was also arrested and charged with the offense, offered him $100 to do so. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions in the past 10 years. He was sentenced to three years in prison.  Charges remain pending against Hollandsworth.

•Anthony Staten, 39, of Sedalia, pleaded guilty to stealing Alvina Seabury’s Play Station 3 and video games on Feb. 6.  When questioned about the crime by Sedalia Police Det. Ron Parrish, Staten admitted he stole the property. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions within the past 10 years. A sentencing assessment report was ordered. Sentencing was set for Aug. 1.

•Kevin Thornburg, 24, of Green Ridge, pleaded guilty to resisting arrest. He was arrested April 23 by Missouri State Highway Patrolman Mark DeGraffenreid. When the trooper tried to stop the defendant for speeding on state Route 52, Thornburg fled from the officer at speeds approaching 100 mph, wrecking his vehicle at the intersection of Highway 52 and Route B. The offense was a felony because the defendant’s conduct subjected others to substantial risk of serious injury.  He was sentenced to two years in prison.
