Anstine said she and Skidmore were working on showmanship pattern skills.

Her number was announced and 4-H member Kylie Sherwood, of Smithville, leads her Curly Horse, Winston, to the Mathewson Center for competition Friday morning. Winston enjoyed neighing at passersby along the way. “He’s a very talkative horse,” said Sherwood laughing.

Rebecca Hensley, 18, a 4-H member from Springfield, had just helped her “show buddy” Bailey Skinner don her riding jacket and then went to groom her American Quarter Horse, Elijah, for the Ranch Riding competition to be held around noon on Friday. “This is my last year to compete,” said Hensely.
