Sacred Heart to serve 31st holiday meal

Sacred Heart School and its National Honor Society students will once again be providing a warm holiday meal to those who need it.
The elderly, homeless, unemployed and those in need are invited to Sacred Heart’s 31st annual free Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve. Those in attendance can enjoy a traditional holiday dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, dressing, bread, pumpkin pie and lemonade. SHS teacher Jessica Webb said last year more than 500 people were served.
Preparations for the meal begin on Monday to get everything set up and volunteers will show up as early at 6:30 a.m. Christmas Eve to begin cooking and getting everything ready for their guests. Volunteers include NHS students, teachers, parents, faculty and community members. NHS has already been working for the past few weeks.
“They’ve been collecting boxes for delivering meals, getting fliers ready, helping prepare everything,” Webb said. “They also sign up for a shift time. They’ll either be serving food for those who come eat or filling boxes and delivering to the homes in the public. They do whatever we do, we assign them a job and they pitch in. They’re good kids and they do whatever is needed.”
Webb said that so far the community has been generous in their donations and by volunteering. All of the bread that will be served has been donated. She also said she has gotten a lot of response from the community thanking Sacred Heart for sponsoring the meal, and that they appreciate seeing the kids help with the event.
“It’s a tradition we’d like to keep, continuing to help people in need and to make someone’s day a good day,” Webb said.
The dinner is open to everyone and will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the SHS cafeteria, 416 W. Third St. No RSVP is needed for the dinner, but requests for free delivery for the homebound must be made by 2:30 p.m. Friday. For more information, to volunteer, donate or to request a delivery, call the church rectory at 827-2311 or SHS at 827-3800.
