Interim Smithton Police Chief Andrew Hoehne, 30, was laid to rest with full honors by the Sedalia Police Department on Tuesday after a long illness.

A member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 16, Hoehne was a dispatcher for the Macon Police Department and a deputy with the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office before working in Smithton.

Hoehne had three kidney transplants during the years and despite the illness, continued working as an officer. Because Hoehne received medical assistance through the state, he was legally unable to obtain a salary and decided to instead work for Smithton without pay. Family members have set up a special education fund for Hoehne’s son, Jackson Hawkins, at Central Missouri Credit Union.

Memorial contributions are also suggested to the Missouri Kidney Program or the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 16.
