During the Change of Command Ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at Whiteman Air Force Base, held at 5-Bay Hangar on the flightline, Brig. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, center right, receives the change of command from Maj. Gen. Scott A. Vander Hamm. VanHerck assumed command of the 509th Bomb Wing from Brig. Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, far right, as he receives the Wing of Guidon from Vander Hamm. The Guidon, with its colored ribbons, signifies the various campaigns won by the Wing since World War II. Standing behind the Guidon is Chief Master Sgt. Lee Barr.

Several local dignitaries attended the ceremony including, from left, state Sen. David Pierce, state Rep. Stanley Cox and his wife Kristeen Cox, Greg Razer with the office of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, and Sedalia Mayor Elaine Horn.

Maj. Gen. Vander Hamm, Commander of the 8th Air Force, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., spoke to approximately 500 people at the ceremony. “We wish you and your family clear skies and calm winds,” he told departing Commander Bussiere and thanked him for serving his extended Air Force family. He added, “Gen. VanHerck is no stranger to Missouri or the 509th, this is his third tour … he has the charisma and leadership qualities that people just want to follow.”
