Fire broke out at Brownings Livestock on Scottsville Road in the early morning hours of Monday, destroying a new barn before firefighters were alerted. A passerby noticed flames in the stockyard at about 3 a.m., and alerted the Lafayette Fire Department.
“It was already burning pretty hard,” said Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs. “It was a hay barn, so it just burned. It was completely involved by the time we arrived. We had to call Tri-county in because some electrical lines were there. Everybody done good; nobody was injured. Got it under control pretty quick—good job, as usual.”
Two trucks from the department and between fifteen and twenty firemen were called to the scene. The barn, which was a fairly new, was owned by stockyard owner Stacey Browning. There was no livestock and little equipment inside at the time of the fire, according to Scruggs, but the barn was a total loss.
