Rural history lesson

Wayne Fischer strains freshly pressed sorghum cane juice through a flour sack as Kay Sparks, background, a 4-H youth specialist with the University of Missouri extension office and committee member of the Central Missouri Ag Club which partnered with the Cole Camp Antique Tractor Association to make the field trips possible, explains to Smithton students the labor intensive process of making homemade molasses. In two days, about 450 students, mostly fourth graders from area schools, will get a chance to see a facet of fading rural life that is being kept alive with real life demonstrations using restored antique farm machinery, Sparks said.
