A car struck and seriously injured a pedestrian Thursday afternoon at West 14th Street and South Limit Avenue.

Thomas Hockaday, 67, of Sedalia, was taken by ambulance to Bothwell Regional Health Center and flown to University Hospital in Columbia.

The accident happened about 12:20 p.m. as the man tried to cross the highway. The driver — James Robejsek, 17, of Sedalia — was eastbound on 14th Street, attempting to turn north onto Limit Avenue. Hockaday had just left the Union Savings Bank and was crossing Limit, police said.

Hockaday’s head struck and broke the windshield.

The accident forced authorities to shut down both northbound lanes of Limit Avenue from for about 20 minutes.

Sedalia Patrolman Mike DeHaven said Robejsek saw the pedestrian but did not think he was in his lane of travel.
