Balanced scoring and improved defense in the second half guided the State Fair Roadrunners past Southeastern Illinois 97-86 Saturday in the John A. Logan men’s basketball Shootout at Carterville, Ill.

The Roadrunners (10-4) led 47-45 at halftime but outscored Southeastern Illinois 50-41 in the second half.

“We got some stops. We went to a 2-3 zone, got some rebounds and limited their dribble penetration,” State Fair coach Kevin Thomas said in a telephone interview.

Joe Thomasson led a balanced State Fair attack with 23 points. Kedar Edwards had 20, and Kevin Punter and Jean-Louis Wanya each scored 12. Dondre Alexander had 11 points and Marcus Mondaine had 10.

The Roadrunners are scheduled to face John A. Logan at 1 p.m. Sunday in the final round.
