The Central Missouri mens and womens basketball teams will both enjoy the No. 1 seed in the MIAA tournament this week.
The No. 19 Mules closed the regular season with a 76-64 win over Northwest Missouri on Saturday.
UCM got off to a quick start, leading 8-2 and pushing the lead to 14 with 6:23 left in the half before a 7-0 Bearcats run.
Charles Hammork’s two quick baskets early in the second half extended UCM’s lead to 48-35. Northwest Missouri made several second-half runs but never got closer than six points.
Hammork finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds. Daylen Robinson scored 17 and Ryan Donald scored 10.
With the win, the Mules share the regular season title with the Bearcats. For the first time in school history, the Mules have won or shared the conference regular season title three years in a row. This is the sixth regular season title under coach Kim Anderson.
The Mules will face either Northeastern State or Washburn in the conference quarterfinal at noon Friday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
The Jennies clinched the MIAA regular season crown outright for the first time since 1991 with a 77-56 win over Northwest Missouri on Saturday.
The No. 11 Jennies got 15 points and nine rebounds from senior Keuna Flax. Ravonnia Howard recorded her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. BreAnna Lewis scored 14 points and Shelby Winkelmann and Quinnecia Twine each added 13.
The Jennies will play either Northwest Missouri or Northeastern State at noon Thursday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
