BETHALTO — A former teacher in the Bethalto School District, now a teacher in the Triad District, has been charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual assault.
The charges allege Jason E. Ehlers, 36, of the 100 block of Meadow Drive, Bethalto, committed sexual acts against a preteen, between Sept. 1, 2010, through March 1, 2001.
Officials said there is no evidence any of the victims were current or former students of his. Ehlers was also formerly an administrator in the Southwester School District.
The predatory criminal sexual assault charges are Class X felonies punishable by up to 30 years in prison. They allege he committed the acts while he was 17 or older and the victim was under the age of 13.
The criminal sexual assault charges mention the fact that the victim is a family member.
Bail was set at $250,000. Authorities said the child reported the alleged crimes to an adult. Ehlers was charged on April 11.
Police said there are counselors available at the Bethalto, Triad and Southwestern districts for students who would like to discuss the matters. Officers are also urging anyone with any information on the case to contact the Bethalto Police Department.
