Smith-Cotton High School boys basketball coach Ray Hughes tendered his resignation recently, and the Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education accepted it during a closed session at Monday’s meeting.

Hughes led the Tigers to an 18-28 record in his two seasons as head coach.

“We hate to see him go,” Smith-Cotton Activities Director Rob Davis said. “He did a good job while he was here. We wish him luck in the future.”

Hughes said that he’s looking for another opportunity. “It’s time to move on,” he said. Hughes said that he wants to be a head coach again.

“I had a great time watching the guys mature,” Hughes said of the Tigers. “I feel good about where the program is right now. It’s going in a great direction.

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to coach these guys for two years. I want to thank the administration and staff, as well as Sedalia for a wonderful two years.”

Davis said that the open position was posted Tuesday.

“We’re already getting good quality applicants,” Davis said. “We’re excited about the opportunities ahead of us. We want to make this a quick search. We’re going to continue gathering applications this week and next. We’ll pick three or four and start interviewing. We want to put this to bed in a month.

“I think the word is out that we have a good group of kids, and the younger classes have had some success.”

The Tigers will bring back sophomore Chance Johnson, who led the team in scoring average with 14.8 points, and forward Jacob Bergman, who averaged a double-double with 11.7 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomores forward Donte Scroggins and guard Dalton Zaremba are also expected back.

Davis said he’s looking for a coach who can be a difference maker.

“We want someone who knows basketball,” Davis said. “We want someone who can motivate kids, someone who’s going to be visible in the community, someone who is a good communicator with the community and parents and someone who wants to commit to Sedalia for a long time.”
