The Pettis County Clerk’s office is making its final preparations for the April 8 municipal elections with less than a month to go before the contest.
Elections will be held throughout Pettis County, with contested mayoral, city council and/or board of aldermen in Sedalia, Smithton, Green Ridge, La Monte and Houstonia, as well as a contested school board race in Smithton. Pettis County Clerk Nick La Strada said he expects those contests to spur heavier turnout in the affected voting districts.
“I’m expecting a decent turnout in Sedalia with the mayor and two contested council seats. That tends to bring out more voters,” La Strada said. “Usually we don’t have this many municipality elections that are contested, but it is good to see that.”
Absentee voting for the April 8 election opened Feb. 25 and runs through 5 p.m. April 7. The last day to request a mailed absentee ballot or a visit from the clerk’s absentee voting team is April 2. Wednesday is the last day to register to vote in the April election.
“As of (Monday) we have received 116 ballots. We have 250 people on our permanent absentee list sent out and so far we have received back 87,” La Strada said. “We have also sent and received one military ballot and we have had nine walk-ins voting absentee at the courthouse.”
Voters who need to register or who would like to confirm their registration may now do so online by visiting pettiscomo.com, clicking on the “Clerk” tab and then clicking on the appropriate link on that page. Registered Pettis County voters who need to make a name or address change may still do so after Wednesday.
“The most important thing for people to do if they have questions is to contact us,” La Strada said. “We want to make sure that everyone who is eligible and wants to vote gets to vote.”
Poll worker training will take place in four sessions, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. March 27 and 28.
Voters who have questions or concerns about their registration, absentee voting or other election-related questions may call the clerk’s office at 826-5000, ext. 918, or La Strada’s cell phone, 281-7767.
